upper sum overestimates the area and lower sum underestimates the area under the curve. The concept of percentage error can be incorporated here. Students doing an IA on say Trapezium rule will benefit from this applet. The applet makes it easy to show that as the number of rectangles increases, the approximation of the area becomes more accurate.
