There is a method we can use called the distance formula to find the distance between two points. BUT - we can also use the Pythagorean Theorem!! This lesson will focus on using the Pythagorean Theorem in a coordinate grid.

Example #1: If we want to find the distance between these two points - (2, 2) and (5, 6) - we need to find the length of (c)

Example #1 - To find the length of (c) above:

1. Draw a right triangle making the line between the two      points the hypotenuse (c). 2. Find the length of the legs you just drew (a) and (b).  3. With all those values we now have a right triangle and      can use the Pythagorean Theorem as follows: We will use 3 for a (the bottom leg is 3 units), and 4 for b (the right leg is 4 units) The distance between the points (2,2) and (5,6) is 5 units.

Example #2: If we want to find the distance between these two points - (1,2) and (13,7) - we need to find the length of (c)

Let's try Example #2 above using the same steps we did in Example #1

What is the distance between points (1,2) and (13,7)? type your answer below - don't forget "units" for your label :)

Let's try Example #3. All the steps are the same, except we will round our final answer to the nearest hundredth

Let's try Example #3 above; will round our final answer to the nearest hundredth

What is the distance between points (1,1) and (8,5)? type your answer below - round to the nearest hundredth

Guided Practice #1: Find the distance between (1,3) and (16,11)
