Transformations from the Graph of 1/x
Day 2 of rational functions
-Graphing transformations of the graph
Part 1: Exploring a, h, and k.
1. Re-set the sliders so that a=1 and h and k are zero. What is this graph?
2. Move only the slider for a. How does the graph change as a changes?
3. Re-set a to one by clicking "Values for 1/x" and slide only the slider for h. How does the graph change as h changes?
4. Re-set h to zero and slide only the slider for k. How does the graph change as k changes?
Part 2: Matching a Graph to an Equation
1. Copy the equation at the top of the screen onto your worksheet.
2. Move the sliders for a, h, and k until your graph matches the equation at the top of the screen. If your values are correct, the word "Great!" will appear on your screen.
3. Record the values of a, h, and k for the graph onto your worksheet.
4. Record the horizontal and vertical asymptotes of the graph onto your worksheet.
5. Describe the change from the graph of to the new function
6. Click "New function" and repeat steps 1-5 above for several more functions.
Part 3: Follow-Up Questions and Homework
Answer the follow-up questions provided in your packets before class tomorrow.
