Exploring Reflections

Create a polygon!

Part 1:
  1. Use the polygon tool:Toolbar Image to create a quadrilateral on the coordinate plane below.
  2. Select one of the vertices of your quadrilateral and show the name of it by selecting the text tool: Toolbar Image and select "name".  Repeat this process for all of the vertices. *Note: make sure before you select something, you have clicked on the move tool: Toolbar Image!!
  3. Use the reflect about line tool: Toolbar Image by clicking first on the tool, then one of the vertices of the quadrilateral, and finally click on the x-axis.
  4. Repeat step 3 for all of the vertices of your quadrilateral.
  5. Record the coordinate pair for the original quadrilateral and the image.
Part 2:
  3. Use the reflect about line tool: Toolbar Image by clicking first on the tool, then one of the vertices of the quadrilateral, and finally click on the y-axis.
  4. Repeat step 3 for all of the vertices of your quadrilateral.
  5. Record the coordinate pair for the original quadrilateral and the image.

Questions:

  1. What do you notice happens with the coordinates of the points when you reflect the quadrilateral over the x-axis?
  2. What do you notice happens with the coordinates of the points when you reflect the quadrilateral over the y-axis?
