Definitions of terms: A tangent meets the conic only at its pole, the point of contact. Figure 8.1 B, P and Q are points of contact (Poles) and p and q are the tangents. A secant meets the conic twice. Figure 8.1 B, Line h is a secant. A line that is neither a secant nor a tangent is a non secant. Figure 8.1 B, line e is a non secant. The point lying on the conic is an exterior point if it lies on two tangents. H lies on the two tangents p and q and is therefore an exterior point. All other points are interior points. Interior points form a pencil of all secant points. Figure 8.1 B, E is an interior point.
