Surface Area Exploration
- Ben Graber
Below is a three-dimensional model of a triangular prism. Use this model to evaluate the surface area of a prism. The surface area is the combined area of all the faces on the exterior of this shape.
How many faces (sides) do you see on this shape? What shapes are these faces? The length of AB = 3, AC = 4, BC = 5, and the height of the prism is 3. Calculate the area of each of the faces of this prism. What is the total surface area of this shape? Find a rectangular prism in the room (examples: boxes, books, phones, etc.). How many faces do you see on this object? Calculate the surface area of this object.
