Exploring Properties of Dilations

Select a shape to see what happens when the shape is dilated (choose just one shape at a time). You can then change the amount the object is dilated by modifying the slider. Notice there are segments drawn connecting the anchor point, through the preimage, to the corresponding point on the image. That segment’s length is the distance from the anchor point to the preimage point times the dilation factor. Then you will investigate the lengths of segments joining any two points on the preimage and compare those measures with the lengths of segments joining the corresponding points on the image. You will also compare angle measures. This will allow you to make conjectures about what properties are preserved under a dilation.
