Triangle Awareness

Assignment Details

This assignment has the students looking at different properties of the following triangles: isosceles, scalene, and equilateral. This would be a gateway into looking at the angles that are defined by angle size. (equilateral, right, acute, obtuse)

Start with Play

Using the blue vertices, manipulate the triangles and take notice of things such as side length and angle size. (With the orange triangle, assume all side lengths cannot be equal.)

Identifying Triangles

Now that you have played with these triangles answer the following questions for each one. When the triangle is manipulated what patterns do we notice?  What doesn't change? What would you call the yellow triangle? Blue? Orange?

Content Standard

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.G.A.1 Understand that shapes in different categories (e.g., rhombuses, rectangles, and others) may share attributes (e.g., having four sides), and that the shared attributes can define a larger category (e.g., quadrilaterals). Recognize rhombuses, rectangles, and squares as examples of quadrilaterals, and draw examples of quadrilaterals that do not belong to any of these subcategories.
