In the digital environment the student can sketch the graph of the derivative digitally using the purple cursor. Feedback on the sketch can be obtained with a button.
The student can drag the point P along the graph.
The blue line segment is the segment from P+(1,0) to the intersection of the vertical line through P+(1,0) and the tangent of the graph. The blue line segment is also plotted along the horizontal axes at x(P) thus constructing the derivative.
