Introduction to Linear Function

This is a set of lessons to introduce students to the concepts of linear functions. Delivering these lessons with guidance can help students to develop concepts as follows: 'Rectangles on the cartesian plane' lays the foundation for the slope formula and the distance formula, but aims to teach neither. A class discussion part way through of how to use the coordinates to measure length is a great supplement to the materials. 'Coordinates and Linear Functions' develops the idea of relating the y coordinate to the x coordinate and ordered pairs. 'Plotting points' develops the idea of mapping from x to y. The input bar is offered without introduction and some students will see how to use it. 'Identify a Linear Function' - this is a nice applet to have on the board to demonstrate the two terms of a linear function. This activity is quite short - five fixed examples and a randomised applet to finish up. The activity pairs well with Desmos Marbleslides. 'Linear Functions Patterns' ties a few ideas together. There are multiple approaches to all parts of this activity: everyone can start and finish with a variety of styles of math en route.
