Area: Abnormal Shapes- Lesson 3

Directions

Estimate the area of shapes a-d. Don't forget to include the label "unit squares" to your guesses! What is challenging about these areas? How can you find the area of a shape with a diagonal in it? Then find the actual area using the unit squares. Right click and turn on the grid tool to help you. When you finish, use the bottom three rectangles to find three DIFFERENT shapes with an area of 8 unit squares that also include AT LEAST ONE DIAGONAL. Try to find a strategy for creating the different areas.
