Gather like terms interactive lesson
Teacher demonstration
Different tiles (or 'coins') represent different letter combinations.
Tiles that are like have the same letter combinations. Like-tiles have the same value as each other.
A term is made by collecting like-tiles together.
The coefficient of each term is the number of like-tiles.
An expression is made by adding all the terms together.
The expression is evaluated by substituting a value for x and for y.
There are 9 activities in this lesson. It is possible to complete this activity without a calculator.
'Task 1' shows like-tiles gathered together. Calculate the total. check the box to see if you are correct.
In these activities each kind of tile has a different value. The value is determined by the letter combination. The tiles with the same letter combinations are like and can be grouped together.
Explain why the tile cannot be gathered with the term .
