Kalon mosque spandrel at the inner court - gp
The spandrel on the eastern iwan of the Kalon moskee at the inner court looks complex.
The line pattern is generated by decagons, pentagons and barrel shaped hexagons, elements of the fivefold system.
The seemingly complexity of the line pattern is due to the widening of the lines, creating the idea that the pattern is formed by numerous little polygons. In the applet below you see that:
- A simple 10-2 star is created in the decagons. The middle of each edge is connected with the middle two edges further.
- In the pentagons the middle of each edge is connected with the middle of the next edge.
- Continuous lines create an octagonal form in the barrel shaped hexagons.
