Apparent Depth - tracing multiple rays
Looking straight down at something. The horizontal scale is greatly exagerated so that a narrow bundle of rays, still wider than what would really strike the pupil of the eye, are separated enough to see their behavior. For these small angles, the tangent can be reasonably replaced with the sine.
