In the below applet, is a bar chart. You can change the bar heights. Below, it also shows the location of the mean and median.
Play around with this, and then answer the questions below, in your notebook.
Question 1: Change the bar chart, to contain mostly low or high values. Then add an outlier. Which average is affected more?
Question 2: Create a symmetrical distribution. What is the relationship between the mean and median?
Question 3: Create a negatively skewed distribution. What is the relationship between the mean and median? Explain why this may be the case.
Question 4: Create a positively skewed distribution. What is the relationship between the mean and median? Explain why this may be the case.
