Frog Stretcher/Shrinker: Multiplying Real Numbers

Stretcher/Shrinker Tool This file shows how multiplication as scaling works. Stretch or shrink (scale) the original green frog by dragging the mulitplier, or scale factor, S (blue point on the horizontal axis). Change the height of the original green frog by dragging the height, H (green point on top of green frog's head). The height of the new red frog is S x H.
Questions for experimentation:
  • What happens when you switch the values of scale factor and height? For example, switch H=2 and S=3 to H=3 and S = 2.
  • What happens when the scale factor is between 0 and 1?
  • What happens when one of the factors (scale factor or height) is negative?
  • What happens when both of the factors are negative?
