Application #2: Speeding Ticket Fines

DIRECTIONS

Write a piecewise-defined function to represent the situation described, using the format If(interval,expression) for each piece. Add solid or hollow "points" to the graph to clarify what happens when the function rule changes.

THE SITUATION

In Massachusetts, the fine for speeding is $100 for driving faster than the speed limit, up to 10 mph above the posted maximum. The fine increases by $10 for every additional mile per hour above the first 10. Suppose you are driving on Mass 'Pike with its 65 mph speed limit. Let represent your driving speed in mph and represent the total fine for speeding if caught driving at that speed.
